Facebook users now have more control over app share 19 Aug 2014

F8 introduced new ways for users to share stories from apps to Facebook – which could be based on users engaging more with explicit than implicit (auto-posted) stories.

Because implicitly shared stories have naturally declined with Facebook allowing users to mark posts a spam (two years since Open Graph’s introduction), it’s advisable that developers reconsider the way they build apps to automatically post on a user’s behalf.

In layman’s terms, when posting something from Farmville, Pinterest, Spotify, Instagram, Socialcam and RunKeeper (“the best way to get and stay fit”), it will now be shown less in your newsfeed.

So, instead of implicit stories via apps (John Snow could really use your help fertislising his crop), Facebook recommends keeping the following in mind for your app content to still be shown in the newsfeed:

Share content with Facebook Message Dialogue

App content can be shared via Facebook Messenger (that tool most people downloaded and then deleted again) thread. Also, app-to-app linking give developers the tools they need for deep links – like with App Links.

Drive desktop traffic to mobile with Send to Mobile

When logged into your website or Facebook when browsing online, users will have the opportunity to receive a push notification, which takes them to the App Store or Google Play to discover and install mobile apps. Send to Mobile is currently in Beta.

The new Like Button for mobile apps and a web based Share Dialog

Sharing functionality helps show users’ friends what’s important to them, and helps developers increase awareness of websites or web apps. Like and Share buttons are viewed across almost 10 million websites daily, and gives users an easy way to share content from an app. Beta version is available for iOS. Facebook encourages developers to use the Share Dialogue instead of the Feed Dialogue.

So, with no plans to remove auto-posting from any apps yet, it will be interesting to see how the creative process from briefs and brainstorms changes to make room for dev. All in all, you want your content to be seen. Right?
